There is a little march called 'March for Life' in DC tomorrow. Will this march be working to help those without health care? No. This march is happening on the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This is a march for a bunch of cells that cannot survive outside of a womb. This, pardonez-mon Francais, is fucking ridiculous.
I've decided to switch gears for a moment with this blog....to honor Roe. V. Wade. I'm rabidly pro-choice. I believe in the right to choose what is best for you. In 1973, the Supreme Court, of the USA ruled 7-2 that access to abortion is a fundamental right, under the Constitution. 7-2. Not 5-4. Not 6-3. 7-2. Meaning SEVEN men supported a female's right of access to abortion. Their reasoning? Due process. Every citizen of this country is given the right to due process, which guarantees that the state must respect all of your legal rights.
Where the HELL have these kind of men gone? Why do all of the GOP candidates want a say in what I do with my own womb? Why do they think they know what's best for me? Because they're men. Men, whether or not they would like to believe it, are part of the boy's club. Ever heard of the glass ceiling? Or the fact that women couldn't vote until 1920. Blame a man.
Let me redirect you to the HDIC himself, George Dubya Bush Jr. (HDIC = head dick in charge, head dumbass in charge, head douchebag in charge, etc). On November 5th, 2003, the HDIC signed the legislation called 'The Partial Birth Abortion Ban'. The problem isn't the legislation...it's the shit eating grins all of those highly esteemed senators, legislators had on their faces as they signed it. These are the people we voted into office...men who are essentially laughing to themselves because they have managed to get in on Roe v. Wade. Good for you guys! We were at a country at war. Hunting Osama Bin Laden! Priorities, guys, priorities. If signing a piece of legislation striking down womens' rights is what makes these guys happy, I'd hate to hit the bong with them.
Roe V. Wade is unquestionably the most controversial Supreme Court ruling to have ever hit this country. It is the one issue that everyone has an opinion about. Are you pro-choice? Pro-life? I've noticed that pro-choicers fall into several categories: Rabidly pro-choice, pro-choice but personally against an abortion, pro choice in instance of rape or incest. However, ALL pro-choicers all agree one thing: the right to choice and that you, and your doctor are the only ones who know what is best for you. Not a bunch of 70 year old male politicians who cannot get pregnant. It's interesting that these same males are the ones who tout the unborn, but once you're born...you're a burden on the tax payers. These same politicians that fight for the right to be born are the same politicians who think that all of those on welfare are lazy and should get jobs.
For the record....pro-life is offensive. Everyone is pro-life. There are some people who like to live under a nice rock, who believe that abstinence is the answer (its 100% effective, but is it realistic?), and that you should live with your mistakes (why should you have to live with your mistakes?). Unfortunately, how many other mistakes in life can you make that have a consequence as undesirable as a baby at the wrong time? Pro-choicers believe in access to contraception, comprehensive sexual education, and the choice to do what you think is best for you. So I refer to those who consider themselves "pro-life" as "anti-choice".
Many people seem to think that religion should play some sort of part in banning abortion...life starts at conception, everyone deserves to live, etc. Life doesn't start at conception. It starts when you are born. Let's be real, you cannot survive outside of the womb at 8 weeks, because you're merely a bundle of cells. Those pictures anti-choicers like to share with us...that show fully developed fingers, and toes? Did you know that most of those pictures of later-term miscarriages, and are obtained abroad? Why do these people have to resort to such tactics?
It all comes back to religion. 'Life begins at conception'. Google that and see all of the links that come up. There is not one unbiased article on the first page. Princeton even has an article. November 8, 2011, Missouri voted against the Personhood Bill, in which voters were asked if life begins at conception. This bill would have made abortion, birth control, the morning after pills, and IUDs illegal. Thankfully, over 55% of Missourians voted against this bill because they were terrified about what it would mean.
To which I said..."Thank God."
